Despite investigating for a little bit, Ellen and I couldn’t find the source of the noise. When we couldn’t find anything, we decided to get dressed. I stared back at the pond once more before we decided to head back.
As we walked, I updated Ellen on where we stood so far. We climbed over thick branches and traveled through the grassy ground floor. “To be honest, I don’t think we’ll find everything. The circumstances surrounding Delverhold have proven more dangerous than we… I thought. When you have the time, help me take stock of all those who still have spells in their scrolls. While I doubt they’ve used them all up, I’d rather know for myself what we’re working with. Also, when we’ve gotten to the third portal, I want you and mother to take everyone to the fourth island. I’m going to stay here,” I said.
I didn’t have to turn around to know Ellen was looking at me like I was crazy. “You’re staying here? Why?” she asked.
“To get what I am fucking owed!” I answered.
The memories of Boreli’s escape still angered me. I thought of breaking his damned legs. However, that was far too lenient. Even now, his escape made me wonder if I shouldn’t bother rounding up my past crew again. What did it matter? They were all gonna die in the end.
Perhaps because of my mood, Ellen didn’t respond further. We continued our trek through the underground forests, the many illuminating lights providing us with beautiful scenery. If I were a painter, then I’d probably make a fucking fortune selling the shit to some stuffy noble prick.
When we returned, we noticed the members of Raven’s Shadow sat in a circle. “While Daen and I draw its attention, Hannath and Racaell will fire from afar. Truon, find an opening, any that we can use. Once we’ve found one, then Rieth and Gurok will go in for the finishing blow with the essence of fire magic. If it’s not down, then we shall switch to the Second Ilvian Battle Tactic. How does that sound?” Brant asked.
“I wish I had time to craft more fire rounds. If that’s the case, then I’ll have to supplement the rounds with the elemental scrolls given by the captain,” Racaell said.
Hannath grabbed her bow and quiver. “Hmmm, the captain said it was very windy from the troll’s club. I might have to get closer to land a shot. Rieth, can you carve some runes that will help increase the flow of my arrows?”
The Forsaken-Priest nodded. “Indeed, I can. Now can we please hurry? There are too many precious materials here that I’d like to collect instead of talking about strategy!” she replied. They all then took notice of me as Ellen and I entered the field.
“You know, it would help if you joined this meeting as well. This is your supposed fearsome troll after all,” Gurok said with folded arms while I shook my head.
“Trust me, you’ve not seen what you’re about to face. For now, worry not of Yrmindle. He shall come at a later time. Anyway,I need your element scrolls. I’ll be taking stock of all of them,” I said.
“Taking stock? What for?” Truon, the Rogue, asked while the others began handing me the elemental scrolls I’d given them.
I frowned as I stared at the demon still attached to my wrist. Even now, I was aware of Liara’s intentions and emotions. At this moment, she’s inquisitive. The nature of her mana kept changing. Sometimes it was hot, sometimes it was cold. Either way, I felt a boundless pool of it around me, as if I was drowning in it with no hope of swimming to the surface or sinking to the bottom.
It was as I assumed. Liara was partaking of the knowledge sources within Delverhold. She was already a powerful figure in the world of D’orn before now. I wondered just how frightening she’d become if we left. However, there was still Maeloson. I had not felt any presence of him despite the fact that I saw him and that decrepit old man enter the portal here those days ago.
I thought of making a Xanghul for Maeloson, but we were not the closest individuals. I’d kill whoever this fucker was that took him to know that he could track me as well. Despite her steadfastness, I could see in Aesteal’s eyes that she worries for him greatly. I would not wish to lose him here either.
“Because, truth be told, we ain’t gonna be able to take everything here. This isn’t a place that can be explored in the time that we’ve got. Remember that I desired to go through these islands one at a time from the first to the last. Unfortunately, the circumstances have made us hurry. Naturally, there is still plenty of stuff to be found and collected, but we won’t be collecting everything. Fate gave us quite the middle finger for that one. Naturally, we have to pass by Yrmindle anyway, but for the other creatures some are still powerful in their own right. You’ll still need the scrolls for the fourth and fifth island. I don’t want anyone running out since the materials I’d need to make more are on my ship. Unfortunately, I don’t got an endless supply of the witch’s hair to do that,” I said.
Truon was the last to hand his scroll to Ellen and I. We then spent time çeşme escort together going through the rest of people’s scrolls. Unfortunately, this took more time than I thought. In addition to the scrolls, I had to constantly deal with people bringing me shit to ascertain its potential value. Of course, I understood their excitement. For these men and women who’d hardly opened a book their entire life, I suppose anything on these lands was worth a mountain of gold coins.
With time, Ellen and I finished the stock of the scrolls and the spells. Most of them were still in good condition. I must admit that I thought some fuckers would blow their own damn arms off toying with the stuff I’d given them. I was indeed glad to be proved wrong.
Once Ellen and I were done, she leaned back in the grass. It didn’t take long for her to fall asleep. “Wake me up when something’s trying to kill us,” she mumbled. It was clear to me the many hours of failed magic training and our fuck had left her exhausted.
I draped my coat over her in the form of a blanket and left her alone.
WIth my time freed up, I quickly made my way back to where we came. On the way back, my harvest was bountiful. No longer concerned about the safety of my quartermaster, I collected anything that my eyes were set upon. Silver grass, Dewed Flower Petals, Honeyed Thistles, and Ruby Thorns; all of them and more were collected by me. The excitement within me about what I could do with such items moved like a small child.
That said, I don’t think I was the only one. Now, I might have been overthinking it, but I was sure I felt some inklings of curiosity come from An’raie. For a woman such as her who, while not as powerful as Liara, had deadly alchemist talents of her own, I wondered what could still surprise her. Then again, I suppose for mages and those scholarly types there’s always something to look for.
“You seem interested,” I said as I cut some sharp grass from the ground and placed it in another small jar.
“I am not. Nothing of the Betrayer would spark the edges of my mind. Mine thoughts are not focused upon his endeavors,” she replied while I… stopped to reach for some dragonroot leaves.
“Yuo really fell for the fucker hard, didn’t yuo?” I asked.
Suddenly, my soul was overwhelmed by a large aura of anger and hatred. The trees, grass, and vines around me instantly withered away and died. Even the seal which kept her soul bound to mine nearly broke as I doubled over in pain.
“Dare thee to not speak of matters too large for thine own understanding! I shall not put up with this mockery! I have no need of such worthless attachments!” An’raie screamed at me before the aura stopped and I experienced a feeling of deep sorrow.
The Lonely Wail spoke no more to me and I caught my breath, once again trembling at her might. Indeed, she earned her title of the Witch of Boiling Stone. Not much was capable of living when her full fury was laid out. Then again, I suppose in some regards, I was the same way.
I decided to leave the witch to her own devices while I stepped out of the field of death that surrounded me. I picked luscious fruits from the trees, eating some of them and feeling them strengthen my body, tempering it in ways many would think ridiculous. When I picked up a stone in my hand, I broke it between two of my fingers. When I found a boulder forged from black stone, I punched it and its face cracked.
Clearly, my strength had grown. I’d have to give some of these to the others. I could sell this to many nations and empires. Hell, if Lady Knight proved good on her promise then I wouldn’t mind giving this to her empire. However, I’d have to do this carefully. I still had no idea of my true enemy, the one who caused my death to end the world. Somehow they’d used my crew to strike me down. If I hand these materials to other nations, I could also strengthen my enemy as well. Then there were those other three said to be just like me. If there was one thing I didn’t like, it was prospering my enemies. Perhaps when Ellen awoke, I would need to speak with her about trade and business. There was a reason I left the numbers to her.
Of course, I would try not to push all the work onto Ellen. I would have to learn this stuff for myself.
I stared back at the black stone boulder I’d punched. It was tough, rich, and beautiful. Whether for a weapon or for armor, this could become part of the material in a worthy set. I sealed up the enter black boulder in the scroll I used for myself and continued on my way.
My return back to where Ellen was practicing took longer than I thought, but I blamed my natural curiosity for that one. I think with Liara’s memories melding into mine, I’ve discovered some curious tendencies from her as well.
Anyway, once I entered the area. I noticed the waterfall. The water from above crashed down into the pond below. When I stared at its surface, I saw nothing in particular. Indeed, it was the most beautiful, most pure spring başakşehir escort of water I’d ever seen, but I saw no hints of anything living in it.
I placed my hand in the water, its coolness wrapped around me like a wet glove. I thought that if I placed my hand within the pool, something might bump into it. Unfortunately, that also wasn’t the case. There was nothing but cool, mana-restoring water.
I took out my hand, very confused. Curiously, I decided to pull out my waterskin pouch. I dipped it into the water, letting it fill up. If this could restore mana, then it was of great use to me. It would also be of great use to everyone else. I’d bring them here to fill up their own water sources. Of course, if they found other ones then I wouldn’t seek to complain.
Suddenly, I felt something brush against my left knuckle. It was something rough and scaly, almost like the fin of a fish. I almost thought I imagined it. I thought it could have been a wayward stone or a branch, but it didn’t feel like either of those. It just felt like something that could only come from a living creature.
When I looked back at the water, I saw tiny ripples. They were so tiny I almost lost them in the ripples of the water from the waterfall crashing into the pond. I think I saw about two… four… five of them swimming around before the ripples ducked underneath the water.
Then, one of the ripples appeared at the other side of the bank. It swam closer and closer to me before it touched my finger and then swam off.
Another swam up to my right hand and brushed against my index finger before it swam off too. I couldn’t tell if I was being studied or toyed with. I continued to keep my hands where they were, allowing these… ripples to have their fun. While I had absolutely no idea what was happening to me, I think An’raie did. Her spirit was suddenly much calmer, and I think I detected a hint of relief.
When another moved closer to me, I swiftly moved my right hand. I definitely caught a fistful of something. It squirmed in my hand frantically, almost like it was scared. I called it an ‘It’ because I didn’t even know what the fuck I was holding at the moment. Whatever it was, it had a body that kept tickling my fingers as it tried to escape.
Remembering that this was a neutral zone, I desired to bring whatever I had in my hand no harm. So, I slowly took my right hand out of the water. I opened my palm a little, hoping that this… thing took my gesture as a non-aggressive one.
As the water slowly drained out of my right hand. I turned it over and slowly opened it. For a moment, I thought myself insane. There was nothing there, even though I could undoubtedly feel the weight of something living on my palm. I knew because something tiny kept touching the little cracks of my fingers. It was only when all the water was drained that my eyes widened.
In my palm, there laid a very tiny half-woman, half-fish being with beautiful multicolored scales and vibrant, tiny wings that seemed to every color beneath a rainbow. The woman-creature looked at me, her eyes blinking at me. It seemed she was just as confused about me as I was about her. For once, I was at a total fucking loss for words. I’d never seen such a woman before.
Well, actually let me correct that. She was a mermaid, obviously. I’ve definitely seen those as well as sirens. However, I know not mermaids nor sirens that hold tiny wings.
“This is no mere mermaid. This is a fairmaid. They are a creature born from the soul of a mermaid and the orbs chests of fairies. I… had mentioned such an idea to the Betrayer once. I had not thought he’d ever… complete them,” An’raie said, her voice almost like a whisper.
I turned back to the fairmaid. Her tiny hands explored my palm, her confidence growing as I proved to be no threat to her. I suppose to her I was as unusual to her as she was to me. I was probably her first human.
I turned back to the pond and I saw the other four fairmaids remove the cloak of the water from their bodies. They stared at me, almost waiting to see what would happen.
“That crazy bastard actually created a mix of a fairy and a mermaid?” I asked.
What would he do this for?
From what I know of fairies, they usually align themselves to the spirits that best suit their wishes. Just as there are some good fairies, there are also evil fairies. Each of them, and all those in-between, were proficient in magic. However, for what reason would he make them mermaids? That was basically forcing them to have an affinity for water magic.
“What would he make them for?” I asked.
“I am unsure. When I referred the idea to him, he thought it a waste of time. For mine own research, I held thoughts that a fairy’s natural ability to merge with any primary element might be such a characteristic that found itself in another unlikely creature,” An’raie said.
…What?
“Aye. I’ll just pretend I knew what the fuck you just said,” I replied küçükçekmece escort before I looked back at the fairmaid. She was now crawling on my arm, her wet fish tail slapping me sometimes.
The others drew closer to us and the one on my arm made it to my sleeve. She touched the material, holding and pulling it with lots of inquisitiveness. I found it rather funny. I swayed my arm up and down, amusing myself at her alarmed stares. Her head and wet, blue hair swaying back and forth, wondering what was happening to her.
Having had my fun, I set her back down to the water. She looked at the water and then she looked at me. She hopped back into the pond and, before I could pull my hand out, the other four wanted a turn. I wondered if one could be amused and annoyed at the same time. Intrigued by them though I was, I wasn’t some damn ship ride!
They crawled all over me, two were on my arms while another climbed all the way on top of my head. The last rested in one of the pockets on my shirt, her body getting my clothes wet. I felt like a grumpy orphanage fucker taking care of a bunch of little bastards and bitches. The one on my head kept pulling my hair sometimes trying to fucking swim through it like it was water.
“That ain’t water, lass!” I exclaimed while she pulled. Annoyed, I wondered how much they’d sell for, but somehow I didn’t have the fucking heart.
“So this is where you were, Sir.”
A voice came behind me, frightening the fairmaids. I turned my head and noticed Aesteal coming through the trees, amusement on her face at my predicament.
“Not a fucking word, Aesteal,” I said as my Bonded came over to me, staring at the tiny creatures while one of them looked at her.
“I felt so many emotions from your aura that I got worried. I see that you have been invaded by ferocious beasts,” she said, chuckling.
Oh, I’d give her something to fucking chuckle about if she kept it up. I wonder how I went from pirate captain to plaything of female fish fairies.
Aesteal held out her hand and the one on my head touched her palm. It then slid into her hand, its wings flapping every now and then. I noticed the one back in the pond glaring at the others, its tail flapping left and right.
“What’s wrong with you?” I thought to myself before I felt the presence of intense mana behind me. I turned around and noticed Aesteal and the fairmaid staring at each other. Suddenly, the fairmaid’s hair turned from dark blue to silver. Her fish-like ears elongated themselves like Aesteal’s ears. Finally, some kind of green rune lit itself on my elf’s right hand.
The glow didn’t last for too long, but the fairmaid quickly climbed Aesteal’s clothes and settled into the pouch of her shirt. I could only look on in confusion. “What the fuck just happened?” I asked.
“‘Tis simple to explain, Drakclaw. That fairmaid contracted itself with the elf. ‘Tis rather unusual that because of the contract it took on some of her characteristics. There must be something about thy Bonded that appealed to it. However, I am unsure why it would contract itself so readily to someone it just met,” An’reie answered while Aesteal opened her chest pocket. The fairmaid poked its head out for a moment, curiously taking in its surroundings. Its wings flapped happily, changing colors every so often.
The other four just watched curiously while Aesteal stared at me. “What happened?” she asked.
“Apparently, that fairmaid likes you. You got contracted,” I said while one of the three creatures patted my face.
I noticed a strange look in Aesteal’s eyes. Her aura seemed unsettled by the idea that she’d been contracted. I wasn’t sure why. As I’m aware, most warrior elves make contracts with various spirits in their aligned kingdom. For one from Fgg’rial, especially such a powerful one like Aesteal, it should’ve been normal.
“‘Tis not that surprising. For those of her blood, there are only certain types of spirits that would make a contract with her. It seems that fairmaid was one such type,” The Lonely Wail answered.
Those of her blood? I had no idea what that meant exactly. As usual, though I was curious, I decided not to push the issue too much in regards to Aesteal and Maeloson’s circumstances. I figured I would know in my own time. I could tell there were things she didn’t wish to talk about.
Anyway, once I was done having my face experimented on, I grabbed the other three and placed them back in the pond. Unfortunately, the fourth, the one who got on me the first time, took that time to quickly jump out of the water. It grabbed my hand and, in a speed that surprised even me, crawled into one of my pant’s pockets.
Annoyed, I tried to grab it, but it was a slippery fucking thing. It was also feisty as well. To avoid hurting it, I tried to pull its tail, but its tiny fingers clenched the material of my pockets, unwilling to let go.
“Seas-damned piece of shit. I ain’t a walking ship for stowaways!” I exclaimed before I heard Aesteal chuckle.
“It seems you’ve found one that enjoys your crassness, Sir,” she replied.
Fed up with how this all went, I grumbled like the old fuck I knew I was. I released the fairmaid from my grip and I felt her wiggle around before she finally settled. It didn’t take long for the other three to join her in different pockets. I could feel the side of my head pulse as I rubbed my temples.
